I recite a number of the questions, and answers, from the US Citizenship Civic Test, while hiding under a bed that is covered with a yellow and brown striped blanket. The test is one of the exams immigrants must pass on the journey to US citizenship.
Black socks, rising out of shiny black shoes, serve as the coat of arms for this ‘flag’ of an imagined, and transitory, country. I lived in it for seven years, sporting the legal status of conditional permanent resident alien.
